PA#6 -- They say, but I say (refutation, part 1).

In PA#3 you established a point of view (a thesis) on a subject and divided your support of that point of view into separate sub-arguments.
In PA#4 you stated and supported one of those sub-arguments.
For PA#6, consider an argument against your position (a counter-argument). State it and explain it clearly and objectively. Then state an argument (a refutation) responding to the counter-argument. Them, explain your refutational argument and provide evidence that supports it.

1. Topic sentence/ statement of the counter-argument

2. Explanation of the counter-argument (Don't spend too much time here, but you should be clear and objective.)

3. State your refuting argument.

4. Explain it.

5. Provide some evidence that it is true.

Use the templates/ transitions in TSIS to indicate the moves you are making.

Some people may say this it is just a coincidence that there are so many athletes in my AP Calculus class as opposed to non athletes. However, this has been the case in AP Calculus for years. The class has been dominated by athletes for years. The year before me there were only 12 people in the class and 9 of them were athletes. My year we had 18 students in the class and only 4 were non athletes. The year after me, everyone in the class played a sport. When the statistics are consistent over 3 years, there is no coincidence.

However, not all people agree that we should expand mental health care by providing easier access to treatment. Some people would argue that those suffering from mental issues should learn how to deal with their problems individually and without relying on medications or medical treatment in the form of cognitive, behavioral, or technological therapies. Those who share this viewpoint often cite the many adverse reactions people can have to these medications and therapies as reasoning for these treatments to be made unavailable or limited. It is true that people can have adverse reactions to medications and treatments for mental illness, however, these reactions are rare and can often be managed quickly and prevented through correcting medications, treatments, and dosage for each individual. The most common reactions people have to these medications include dizziness, fatigue, nausea, headaches, and sexual problems. Other symptoms such as insomnia, suicidal thoughts, new or worsening anxiety and/or depression, panic attacks, mania, and skin reactions can be treated through withdrawl of the medication/treatment that caused it or through a minor hospital stay or doctor’s visit in order to manage the symptoms and return the individual to normal (http://www.nimh.nih.gov/).

The many distractions that come with college are extremely diverse in their population. Most of them are actually portrayed as negative, hedonistic activities where students indulge in greed, gluttony, and envy. Consequently, there is a consensus among the general population that all of these distractions are negative and that nothing good can come out of experiencing them. Although it may be true that these distractions are not the smartest to indulge in, there is a lot of good that can come out of it. For one, when you experiment with things such as drinking, you are able to learn a lot about yourself. There is something to be said about someone who knows who he or she are and is confident despite what others may see in them. Secondly, it is a safe bet that most people like to have their cake and eat it too, and when you indulge in these activities you are going to have to find a balance in which you’re able to do that. The cake being a representation of social life, school, sports and the eating being successfully balancing all of these and managing to excel in one if not all of them. When you mess up either the day after you were drinking because you are hung over or you simply forgot to do your homework or laundry, it is an extremely vital part of the maturation process. Through these mistakes you are able to evaluate and make decisions for yourself whether it is bettering your time management skills, or having the understanding that maybe going out and the social scene really isn’t for you. Either way, the distractions that exist within the college experience are ones that every student is going to face one way or another. When avoiding them completely, you are draining away the growth and life experience that is so vital to the maturation process of young students.

There are Americans who argue that if English is the language used the majority of the time in the United States then what purpose does learning a foreign language serve. English is the first language of the majority of the population. More official reasons include the factor that most government-made properties, such as federal legislation and road signs, are written in English. However, the United States has a large population so minority groups can be quite large. For these people there are also resources provided by the government to receive translations of government documents like presidential speeches. There are millions of Americans who do not speak English as their first language. According to the Pew Research Center, there are 37.6 million Americans who speak Spanish at home.

Many people think golf is just a sport to have fun with friends and family many college golfers and professionals work out and practice a whole lot to improve their athleticism. In contrast, other don’t work out at all. My personal experience is watching my sister, Cori who played golf and also did girls weightlifting. After participating in girls weightlifting and getting stronger she had to stop working out and getting stronger so that she didn’t have to keep changing the clubs she used for different distances. When she didn’t want to change everything she just stopped lifting and working out and just practiced golf. Along the same line a reporter, Luke Kerr-Dineen, interviewed professional golfer, John Daley, and asked him about his workout and his response was “I don’t workout, I put out” (Kerr-Dineen). This supports the fact that all college and professional golfers don’t find it necessary to improve their athleticism.

Many people in the United States could argue that the only reason soccer is so popular in the world is due to the fact that it isn't an expensive sport. To play the sport all you need is a round ball and field that happens to be flat. In reality, this is only half of why it is so dominant compared to any other sport. One reason the game so popular is because of the fluidity. Soccer is one of the few sports that isn't constantly interrupted with commercials and timeouts. Another reason that it is so popular is due to it's social reach. The game connects people of different age, race, cultures, and nations to celebrate the world's greatest game.

As kids we always heard our parents say that all parts of chocolate are unhealthy for us. So too, they thought they were doing us a favor and keeping our minds strong. While they are right about chocolate, they are wrong about “every part.” New studies are now making the adults sound like they are trying to keep us away from a strong mind. In fact, Medical News Today posted an article about a 3 month study dealing with having a high and low flavanol diet. These flavanols are found in cocoa, which is very different from chocolate. Cocoa is unprocessed and raw while chocolate is put through a loop ten times before it can be called so. Their study concluded the higher the flavanol content, the better it is for your memory. In addition Dr. Small, the head of the study, said, “‘If a participant had the memory of a typical 60-year-old at the beginning of the study, after three months that person on average had the memory of a 30 or 40-year-old.’” In conclusion, chocolate can be healthy in the right form.

  8. Still, some will disagree, arguing that words mean nothing; that a word like retarded has no effect on those it describes. After all, how much power can a word possess? How can a simple word cause harm? Contrary to this rather hurtful opinion that words cannot cause harm, a study by Martin Teicher at the Harvard Medical School proves that verbal abuse and insulting vocabulary causes real and legitimate damage to the brain. Given a brain scan, young adults who were victim to verbal abuse during their formative years had underdeveloped “connections” between the left and right sides of their brain. Furthermore, these individuals studied, shows greater levels of depression, anxiety, and other mental illnesses. Words and insults such as retarded cause legitimate harm.

Some might argue that even though the animals don’t have much room, neither do the human performers. Like the animals stay in small cages, the people also inhabit small rooms, usually on a trailer or bus. Although this might be the case, the human performers are still capable and have the privilege of leaving, stretching out their legs, and getting some fresh air, while the circus animals do not. These circus animals were not meant to be cooped up all day, on the contrary, elephants, tigers, and lions wander over many miles each day in the wild. These cages strip the animals’ ability to get the daily physical activity they need.

  10. One could reasonably argue that although exercise may be an important part of a chess player's training regimen, that does not automatically make them coordinated and athletic people. One will still become healthier by playing soccer and lifting weights even though they are constantly tripping over their own feet and use improper form. However, exercising without proper form and technique could end up being just as detrimental to one’s chess career as not exercising at all. Performing exercises improperly increases the possibility of dislocations, broken bones, torn ligaments, etc. and those injuries would force a player to stop exercising until the injury healed. Injuries of chess players aren’t well-documented but one can look to sports for an example. When professional basketball player Derrick Rose tore his right knee meniscus in 2015 he was unable to perform his typical workout routine or attend practice until the injury was healed. As he waited to be cleared by a doctor his peers continued to improve, gained new accolades and won championships. If a chess player suffered a similar injury they would lose out on all of the benefits they received from exercising while waiting to be cleared by a doctor and essentially be in the same boat as players that don’t exercise at all. Desperately trying to keep up with the players that could continue to be physically active.

Regardless, some still believe that animals are not intelligent. One reason one may think so is because animals do not have a language like humans. The vocal organs that are present in humans are not in animals. Because of this absence, one is left to wonder if animals can communicate with others. If communication is present, then the creature appears to be more intelligent because it is able to process how to send and receive information. Similarly, some might compare lack of language to being a human who cannot talk. A young child might hide behind a parent’s leg if a stranger started to talk to him or her, but with age, an adult might start a conversation instead. As startling as it may seem, communication is present in the animal kingdom, too. It is just different from human language. For example, if a honey bee finds a grand spot for nectar, he was fly back and notify the hive. A bee will move around and buzz his wings. The speed and direction of movement directs the other bees to the exact location of the food. For an animal that is often seen as having very little intellect, to be able to remember a position of food, then be able to use a code that others can also interpret and follow proves that animals are capable of far more than what humans might have expected. The code that bees use is similar to the code, or alphabet, that humans use today.

Many people believe that participation in extracurricular activities have many disadvantages towards those involved. Some say that it causes health issues, social issues, stress, and harms academics; those who argue may have never played a sport or participated in any other type of activity. Surely, kids who absolutely enjoy what they are involved in look at it as a stress reliever, push themselves in the classroom to stay eligible, eat healthier to play better, make plenty of new friends, sleep well, and even boost self confidence. “Children develop time-management skills, build self-esteem, and practice goal-setting. While it may be tough to squeeze in after-school activities for your children, the benefits are well worth the extra effort”.

Even though many people consider dance to be a sport, there are still many who believe dance is nothing close to a sport. One one hand, society argues sports have to involve some type of ball, goal, or puck in a game. In reality, in order to successfully participate in a sport, one has to have the dedication, energy, time, and positive attitude. Aside from what many believe, there is much more to a sport than just a ball. For example, mental creativity is key in order to be involved in a sport. Dancers spend much of their time in the dance studio, just as the typical football players spend practicing out on the field.

Many people believe golf is pointless and a waste of time. They do not understand how people find enjoyment in it. Some people associate golf with paint drying and or watching grass grow. In Robin Williams’ explanation of golf, he makes a series of jokes emphasizing the practicality of golf and questions its creation. He sarcastically states, “…its such an exciting and athletic sport to whack the ball get in the cart, whack the ball and get in the cart…”,(1) “… whacking away and each time you miss you feel like you’re going to have a stroke, fuck thats what we’ll call it, a stroke because every time you miss you feel like your going to fucking die…”. (2) Yes, I’ll admit when playing, my teammates and I wonder why we put ourselves through the frustration. However, golf is one of the best sports to play because it is relaxing and rewarding. Some prefer to think of it as a mini vacation from the hustle and bustle of their daily lives. The lessons learned from playing golf can easily be applied to everyday life. These lessons include: determination, independence, and the ability to stay calm no matter how difficult the situation is. This past weekend I played in my first college invitational and I knew I had to be relaxed no matter how nervous I was. My dad surprised me by driving 8 hours from Philadelphia, and I wanted to play even better since he was there. Due to my determination, I played one of my best rounds on the front 9.
