Paragraph 5

People often identify athletes as not very intelligent. They see athletes as people who are addicted to their sport and disregard school work. However, all of my high level classes in high school were dominated by athletes. On the contrary to what people seem to associate athletes with, most of whom are quite intelligent. For the truth is, athletes tend to be amongst the smartest people because we work out all aspects of our health and in turn, exercise our brains in more ways than just academics. In this essay, then, we will look into how athletes do in school as opposed to non athletes and what may contribute to their successes in the academic environment.

Paragraph Assignment #3
Many people think that people who suffer from mental illnesses are few and far between, and those who suffer from them are often considered “crazy.” They see the mentally ill as unstable, unsafe people who need to be institutionalized or heavily medicated to function normally without hurting themselves or others. However, the mentally ill are not as few and far between as society would think. One in five adults and youth in the United States suffer from mental illness in a given year (nami.org), nearly 40% of the U.S. population. Of that 40%, only 4.2% of adults suffer from serious, life-altering mental illnesses (nami.org). Despite popular belief, many of these people live normal lives without needing medications, institutions, and in many cases even therapy. People suffering from mental illnesses are present in thousands of careers, from lawyers and doctors to artists and chefs. These people, despite the limitations of their mental illnesses, have persevered and live their lives like the majority of the population, and deserve to live their lives free of stigma and misconceptions about their illnesses and their personalities.

From the countless movies like Fast Times at Ridgemont High and from Hollywood’s classic depictions of surfers, the terms “surfer” and “deadbeat” often go hand in hand. When the word surfer comes up, many people think of the Rigemont High alum, Jeff Spicoli. Spicoli is a laid back surfer with little interest in the classroom. Known for having “a fascination with truancy”, as his high school teacher Mr. Hand calls his tardiness, Spicoli sets the image for surfers around the world. But if you are more familiar with the surfing world, you might think of one of the greatest surfers of all time, Kelly “The King” Slater, when you hear the word surfer. Kelly Slater offers an example of a polar opposite from Spicoli, except for the fact that they are both decorated surfers. Slater shows that just because you surf, doesn’t necessarily mean that you are a deadbeat burnout. Slater is one of the healthiest human beings that I know, earning him the nickname, Snackboy. From drinking kombucha, a fermented Chinese tea, and eating chia seeds to practicing a strict yoga routine, Slater does everything he can to stay active and healthy. In an interview, Slater shares, “I wanna have longevity. I wanna be 80 years old and be really strong and fit.” a testament to his dedication and motivation in everything that he does. In this essay, we will compare Spicoli’s lackadaisical approach in life to Kelly Slater’s perfection driven lifestyle.
Many Americans think that learning a foreign language is useless. They see English as the only useful language to know. However, learning another language can improve your life. On the contrary, not only does knowing a second language help you understand how a group of people different from you but it also can improve your mind in other ways. An example is “shielding against dementia in old age” (New York Times, Yudhijit Bhattacharjee). For the truth is being even bilingual can enable you to have access to new aspects of cultures. You can connect with people who speak the language as a first language on a deeper level. In this essay, then, we will see how knowing more than one language can improve your life in ways that being monolingual cannot.

Many people believe that participation in athletics or other extracurricular activities is a waste of time, they see involvement in these activities stresses children out and blocks them from focusing on school. However, children learn many useful and life lessons from extracurricular activities. On the contrary, the people who disagree with it may be close minded and not actually realize the good that can come out of it. For the truth is that during involvement, children learn time management skills, respect for their elders/peers, making friends, working hard in/out of school, etc. Kids who are involved in athletics or whatever it is that they desire, they are more likely to go to college for what they want to do and land a great career following their graduation. In this essay, then, I will discuss why I believe that kids who participate in athletics or other extracurricular activities are better off than those kids who do not.

Many consider college to be a place where students go to drink, party and have many distractions that keep them from doing what they are actually there to do which is learn. As a result of this, those people see college as a place that is specifically designed for the growth of knowledge particularly pertaining to book smarts. However, college is designed for the growth of students not simply intellectually, but as a person as well. The expression “everyone messes up sometimes” is extremely popular amongst college students simply because of the fact that the many distractions of life do tend to get in the way of school. Although they do struggle, it is not necessarily a bad thing. Learning how to get back up after being knocked down is part of that growth that is so advantageous for students to obtain throughout college. The time in college where students grow and mature the most are the same tumultuous times that provide for the most difficulty. While the partying and distractions aren’t necessarily a good thing, learning how to handle them in moderation is a key part of maturity and the best way to understand this is through trial by fire.

When people think of the sport golf, they do not think of it as a sport. Also some believe it does not take any skill. However, it takes a certain mentality to play well. They see golfing as a pass time for wealthy and elderly caucasian males. On the contrary, many people of different backgrounds play. For the truth is that many people have a fixed perspective on golfers; and it should be changed. If people are willing to have an open-mind about other topics, then they should have one about golf. In this essay, then, closely examining golf stereotypes compared to reality will change people’s perspective about the game and players.
Neurodiversity is a big topic in the modern day world today. Most describe those who are different than us or think differently than us as weird, idiotic, and worst of all retarded; A word that had been so devolved from its medical terminology into a stigmatized term used as an insult. Originally the word retarded was included in the DSM meaning “slow or limited in intellectual or emotional development or academic progress;” However, because of its extreme stigmatization, it was replaced in the DSM-5 with the term “intellectual disability.” In all actuality, neurodiversity remains a blessing instead of curse. In thinking of neurodiversity much like we do sexuality, race, and other facets of cultural diversity, we are engaging an acceptance that can only be a help to maintaining a successful society instead of a hindrance. Examining the evolution of terminology such as retarded, will in turn allow us to examine implications of hatred in the broader spectrum of our current day society and how we can change and effect it.

I have come to really respect the athleticism needed to play golf. People say golfers are not really athletes because it’s just about going out hitting a little white ball and getting it in a little hole and it doesn’t take a lot of athletic ability to play golf. They see professional golfers in all shapes and sizes and feel like they don’t have to do anything but practice golf. However, having played golf and knowing the type of training my sisters had to participate in playing golf in high school and college I know that is not true. The truth is playing golf as a serious competitor requires times in the weight room getting stronger and golfers have to put in many hours on the driving range hitting shots, chipping and putting. High school and college golfers also train to build up their stamina to be able to walk 18 holes or 36 holes over three days. Despite what people see in professional golfers, college athletes, even golfers, have to eat healthy to be ready to play in tournaments. In this essay, I will take a closer look at the differences in the public opinion of being a high school or college golfer and the athleticism it takes to perform.

I am a die hard chocoholic. It is nice to know I am not the only one. TheFW says that Americans consume almost half the world’s chocolate. This makes sense seeing how chocolate makes us feel so good inside. It contains a chemical called phenylethylamine which releases “feel good” endorphins to our brains. Some say that chocolate is unhealthy. Contrary to this popular belief, chocolate is actually “proven to lower the risk of heart disease,” says Authority Nutrition. To those of you who doubt the benefits of chocolate, this essay is for you.
Many people assume that all chess players are nonathletic and uncoordinated. They see chess players as vampires, harboring the same aversion to sunlight but a hatred of dumbbells and soccer balls instead of garlic. However, many professional chess players do not fear physical activity. On the contrary, playing sports and exercising are integral to performing at one’s peak during tournaments. For the truth is that chess players must be healthy, both mentally and physically, to endure tournaments that can last for hours without the quality of their play dropping significantly. In fact many professional players take it upon themselves to organize basketball and soccer games during the breaks of major tournaments as a way to unwind and stay in shape. In this essay the role that physical activity plays helping players endure long tournaments will be observed by comparing the tournament results of players that aren’t active with players of similar skill that are active.

Circuses, where thousands of people go to watch exotic animals, such as elephants or lions, perform amazing tricks and stunts. They see beautiful animals putting on astounding performances. However, even though you can usually find protestors outside the arenas, people ignore and dismiss the “training” the animals are put through, and instead usually come back the next year, keeping the circuses in business. On the contrary, these circuses should be shut down. For the truth is, the trainers of the exotic animals use whips, tight collars, muzzles, electric prods, bull hooks and other tools to force animals to learn and show off their performances. In fact, under the Animal Welfare Act, circus animals have the right to be protected and treated humanely. Yet, every major circus that uses animals has been cited for violating the minimal standards of care set by the United States Animal Welfare (AWA). In this essay, then, revealing that the circus is violating these beautiful animals’ rights, I will bring to light the actual horrible harm and abuse these animals are put through.

Not many people today associate humans as animals. They see animals as a completely different category than human beings. However, animals share more similarities to us than one might have expected. On the contrary, most animals can express emotions and personalities, too. For the truth is that many characteristics that are said to be distinctly human are not unique to humans. The artificial rift was created by the belief that animals could not use tools. This is no longer the case as multiple studies have repeatedly disproved this school of thought. In this essay, then, compare the different research studies and behaviors of animals to the lives of human beings and decide if animals are more like us after all.

Dancing is not seen as a sport, and is thought of as requiring less work and effort than a sport requires. Dancing is a combination of art, physical activity, and emotion. According to Dictionary.com, the definition of a sport is, "An athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature." Dancing can be done out of boredom, as a weekly activity, a passion, or a profession. Dancers work extremely hard to perfect the feelings that they want to express through body movement. In this essay, closely reviewing the art of dancing will prove that dancing is a sport, and requires just as enough determination and effort (if not more) than a sport does.

Many americans seem to share the view that game of soccer is not as interesting as others. The sport is not even in the top 3 most popular sports in the U.S. It seems that the view in this country is that the game is simply a way to get their child interested in athletics. On the contrary however, the game of soccer is actually the world's most popular sport. An example of this would be to compare the final of the most recent World Cup to last Super Bowl. There was approximately 110 million people who watched the Super bowl compared to a staggering 910 million who viewed the World cup.
