PA#2 – Downshifting

  Hello, students,

Paragraph Assignment #2 – Basic Downshifting

Post the following paragraph in the comments section below by Sunday at 5 PM and bring a hard copy to class. In the meantime, observe your environment. Look around. Take some notes.

Define and describe a problem here at Ohio Wesleyan. Start with a topic sentence that defines the problem. Then describe the problem in more detail in subsequent sentences. Finally, give a detailed example of the problem. Use the details to illuminate the description above.

Write a well developed paragraph that follows the basic downshifting pattern we will discuss in class. Sometime over the weekend, post your paragraph to the blog as a "comment" to this assignment. Also, BRING A HARD COPY THE PARAGRAPH TO CLASS on Friday so that I can read them outside of class.

We will follow that basic pattern on all the paragraphs you write during the first weeks of the semester:

Day 1: Draft the paragraph. Blog it ASAP.

Next class day: Discuss the previous paragraph and assign the next one.

While I do love Ohio Wesleyan, it does have some flaws. The one that easily comes to mind is the layout of a quad in Smith Hall. First of all, it is a little cramped. Welch and Hayes both have 14’x9’ rooms while Smith is 10 ½’x9’. Their extra space gives more closet space, making less clutter, giving you the ability to give everything a home instead of constantly having to dig through Tupperware bins. Second is the awkward “maze” to get from one side of the quad to another. You must go through the common area and try not to trip on bags, cords, chairs, or desks, or you have to go through the bathroom and try not to slip and fall on the wet tile. The last and rather unfortunate thing about the layout is the bathroom. Unlike Welch and Hayes, Stuy and Smith both share the awkwardness of two doors. The difference is Stuy’s doors lock. So if I want to shower, I gotta get in before another roommate decides to do the same.

  2. Traffic near the Ohio Wesleyan campus is a hindrance. It can be an annoyance to not only pedestrians but also motorists. Vehicles driving on a road that a pedestrian has to cross can cause the pedestrian to be late to class. The pedestrians crossing can cause a delay for the drivers as they have to completely stop a 2-ton vehicle. The systems which aim to allow pedestrians to cross safely can fall into fault as it slows down those involved making the people even more concerned about being late. Many people cross streets illegally due to their preference for rapidly getting to the other side as opposed to safely crossing. Imagine having to cross a three-lane street. There are constantly lines of 6 or 7 cars coming from either way so once one direction is clear, the other is unlikely to be as well. In order to cross you have to wait on a signal. However, the traffic lights wait for the lanes to be clear first which usually is not soon. There are instances where there will be no vehicles but you cannot legally cross because the lights are still green for the cars and red for the pedestrians. Then once you cross Williams St. you now have to cross Elizabeth St. Although it is not as busy as Williams St., most students immediately cross the street to reach Sanborn Hall because they already have waited too long and are almost late to class.

One of Ohio Wesleyan’s greatest shortcomings is the accommodations its residence halls provide for less affluent disabled students. Although the more recently built or renovated residence halls like Stuyvesant, Smith, Welch, and Hayes are equipped with elevators, each of these buildings has a barrier to entry. Each building is more expensive than the less accessible Bashford and Thompson Halls, Welch Hall has an additional grade point average (GPA) requirement, and Hayes is a single-gender living space. The lack of residence halls that are both relatively cheap and accessible forces less affluent disabled students to make a difficult choice. Spend money they don’t have or add another slow, painful, and arduous trek up a flight of stairs to the daily walks across campus that already offer their own discomforts. Ranging from the oppressive heat of the summer months to the slippery, wet, and freezing ice that covers the ground during the winter.

The cafeteria hours at Ohio Wesleyan University needs to be extended half an hour before and half an hour after. Too many times have I gone down to get some lunch just to find out that it closed 5 minutes ago or that it doesn’t open for another 15 minutes. Earlier today I went down to get lunch at 2:30 to find out that they had just closed. Every Monday Wednesday and Friday I have an 8 am class and the Cafeteria at Hamwill, which is the only cafeteria that sells breakfast that early, opens at 7:30. That gives me 30 minutes to wait in line for food, eat, and run to my first class. If it opened at 7, it would reduce a lot of stress in the morning.

Ohio Wesleyan University is a small liberal arts college located in Delaware Ohio. Hosting nearly 2,000 students, OWU, as its more familiar population would call it, boasts an up close and personal tutelage to its students. For all of its strengths however, OWU’s difficulty with traffic control has become an increasingly apparent problem to its student population. When walking to and from class, it is not an unusual occurrence to have a startlingly close encounter with one or many motor vehicles. Originating from no or little traffic control devices, such as stop signs or traffic lights, traffic is easily built up, creating hazardous conditions for a student population that in most of its entirety walks to classes and other places near or around campus.

A problem here at Ohio Wesleyan is the overwhelmingly large consumption of alcohol by students. Parties are held many times during the week, which usually contain some amount of alcohol. There are a few issues that this brings up. One is the harm that drinking can do to a person, another being that the majority of this drinking is done illegally. The effects of drinking are not positive on any person, especially not a college student. We are paying thousands of dollars in order to receive a high education, and to wash down the stress and worries with alcohol is not an effective way to decrease our problems. Education and alcohol do not mix, and we are far better students without the consumption of alcohol. Walking to class at 8:45am and passing by the crunched up beer cans scattered in the grass does not send out the best message about our school. Students, professors, and citizens of Delaware walk past Ohio Wesleyan University, and for them to stumble upon the blue beer cans that are spread across many different locations of the campus is not creating the right image of what Ohio Wesleyan stands for. In the future I hope we can have more respect for the place we call home, and for ourselves.

Even though there has been a lot of improvements, Ohio Wesleyan University still has a far way to go in becoming environmentally friendly. The campus is currently trying to combat the problem in the dining places by providing reusable containers and therefore reducing the waste produced. But, another problem is balloons. Since the beginning of the school year, there has been two events where balloons were used by the student body. Balloons are seen as great items for decorations, games and identifiers, but after the event or if they get popped, they are just left. If balloons are not properly disposed of, they can easily be eaten by an innocent animal or end up in the gorgeous water ways that surround this wonderful campus. Once an unlucky animal misidentifies the hazardous plastic and consumes it, the balloon will block the digestive system and starves the animal to death. As a school community, we should either limit the use of balloons or decide to not use them at all to protect the students and the furry friends that also share the campus.

Many OWU students stress over the lack of time they have to eat before classes each morning. Some think that the dining hall should extend their hours while others avoid the dining hall altogether, leaving many students hungry and malnourished. I often hear my classmates recommend HamWil for breakfast. Each morning, I attend breakfast club at the HamWil dining hall and see the many students rushing in and out during the 30 minute window before their 8 am class. As I stand and wait in line for my omelette, I see countless students deciding on what they will get for food and which check out line they will get in, with time in mind. In the morning, there is one single cashier, alternating between the two lines of students at her left and right. This system has proven to be very inefficient as I always find myself rushing to get to class, often times having to forfeit part of my meal. I think that rather than opening the dining hall for longer, they should increase the staff to target these high traffic time periods and focus on handling a higher volume.

One dilemma that Ohio Wesleyan could improve upon is the campus Wi-Fi. Many times the Wi-Fi will automatically connect to bishop guest instead of bishop net. This wouldn’t be a problem if bishop guest worked for everyone but to use it you need a special code which takes to long to obtain. So the problem is having to change the Wi-Fi settings to bishop net, which takes a couple of minutes or so. This can become very taxing and annoying after a while, having to turn off the Wi-Fi, turn it back on, then click on the option of bishop net. Last week I needed to finish up some homework before class and it took me a total of five minutes before the Internet began to cooperate, not a great experience.

As many professors, commuting students, and student drivers on the campus of Ohio Wesleyan University can attest to, a major problem at OWU is parking availability. OWU has a parking system of three lot “types,” A lots, B lots, and C lots, all of which have different parking passes available for purchase. The problem arises when the university appears to have sold more parking passes than there are parking spots. Students and staff who are not at the school first thing in the morning often struggle to find a spot in their respective lots, and end up having to rely on the availability of street and metered parking. However, college classes don’t always run on a precise schedule, and a class can easily overrun a meter or time allotment on a street parking space, resulting in the student or staff member being ticketed and forced to pay a parking fine. Ohio Wesleyan College Credit Plus student Emily Dean has personally experienced this. On one Friday, Dean arrived to campus to discover no parking spots available in any of the C lots, where her parking pass is, forcing her to park at a metered spot in front of campus. Unfortunately for Dean, a test in her final class for the day ran over several minutes, forcing her to be late for her meter and ultimately have to pay a parking fine totaling $7.00, which could easily have been avoided if there had been a parking spot available in her lot.

The Wi-Fi at Ohio Wesleyan University has proven to be a problem to not only the students, but also to the professors. When a student is trying to complete and turn in assignments or teachers are trying to show the class presentations, the Wi-Fi will continually lose and regain connection. This is a problem because assignments, or progress on assignments, may be lost, class and lectures may be postponed or prolonged, and much more. Sanborn Hall is in need of serious help when it comes to this problem. As a music major, I spend a lot of my time in Sanborn, however, since Sanborn Hall is on the complete opposite side of campus from the academic side, the Wi-Fi connection is worse than ever. The biggest problem of this is the music theory classes, these classes spend the whole fifty minutes online, but many assignments and lessons have already been postponed because of the horrible connection.

Regulated parking often is a source of discontent, and I believe parking in Ohio Wesleyan University (OWU) lots is no exception. Whether the amount of parking spots, the cost, and or the enforcement of rules, people will always have a bone to pick with parking. At OWU the rule enforcement on parking is unclear. On August 22, 2016 my roommate parked near Hayes Hall and received a $30 parking ticket. My roommate was livid that she received this ticket because she was notified that the enforcement of the parking rules would not start until the 31 of August. My roommate decided to pay the ticket because she did not want the aggravation of dealing with parking enforcers. Encounters similar to this steer me away from having a car on campus. In order to avoid situations similar to this, OWU should make clear it’s parking regulations.

Ohio Wesleyan University has an issue with heat. The issue being that aside from all of the new improvements that they are making, there still isn’t any air conditioning in Thompson. I lived in Thompson Hall both 3 years ago as a freshman and now as a senior. Granted, the school has been changing for the betterment of it’s student, however I do believe they need to prioritize a lot better. Students should not have to go back to their room after a long day of both school and sports and sweat more throughout the middle of the night then while playing their sport. Some argue “it is too expensive” while others will say, “just go buy a fan”. Although both this excuse and solution are both reasonable, the school is spending a lot of money on improvements and some of that should at least go to AC units for the students. The school could even go as far as to provide the students with fast so that the students are not forced to buy even more materials just to keep from waking up in a bed that is drenched full of sweat. This problem will most likely not be resolved during my time at OWU, however I do hope these changes with come to fruition shortly for the sake of the next group of young minds that will find themselves inhabiting the oven that is Thompson Hall.
