  1. “Why Animals Deserve Legal Rights” Discussion Notes
Argument: Nonhuman animals deserve civil rights in just the way humans do.
Thesis: In “Why Animals Deserve Legal Rights,” Steven M. Wise argues that animals deserve civil rights in some capacity in the way that humans do. I agree that animals deserve some civil rights, but not to the extent of humans.
    Support:
It would be incredibly difficult to give animals the same level of civil rights as humans because of their lack of verbal ability and, as far as we know, complex cognitive thought.
Animals should not be abused or killed nonsensically, they deserve some legal protection from being killed without probable cause.
    Evidence:
Each year, approximately 2.7 million animals are euthanized (1.2 million dogs and 1.4 million cats). (ASPCA)
Harambe- Gorilla killed by Cincinnati Zoo as result of a child falling in his enclosure
Columbus Zoo Tiger Incident- Child fell into exhibit, keepers remove animals far enough away from child, tranquilize the tiger that had wandered over to observe.
Civil Rights: rights to personal liberty established by the 13th and 14th Amendments to the U.S. Constitution and certain Congressional acts, especially as applied to an individual or a minority group. (Dictionary.com)
Animal Rights: the rights of animals, claimed on ethical grounds, to the same humane treatment and protection from exploitation and abuse that are accorded to humans. (Dictionary.com)

  3. Some animals should have some legal rights.
    • Animals that are in Zoos
    • Legal owned pets
    • The abuse on the animals
    • The animals being killed for unnecessary reasons

  4. “Few, if any, philosophers or judges today would argue that being human, all by itself, is sufficient for legal rights.” what makes him say that?
    All humans have HUMAN rights
Babies born without brains are operated on without anesthesia?
Some animals have a very intelligent mind
Should all animals deserve rights? Even those like shrimp or ants?
    What should the rights be?
What should be the requirements for obtaining said rights?

  5. Animals should have rights, but not to the same extend as humans.
    Some animal rights should include:
    • they should not be abused without reason
    • there should be certain rules and regulations when they are held in captivity

  6. • Animals should have rights depending on the animal
o What I mean is that if a population is booming and gets totally out of control then the animal hinting rights should change specifically for that animal
    • Torture and things like that should never be allowed for animals
    • Caging/ trapping in the wild should not be allowed especially with the bear traps that are extremely inhumane
    • Animals that are pets should have a lot of rights to ensure that they will be properly taken care of
o Abuse in the home should never be acceptable
o What is going to be the punishment for someone that tortures animals

  7. over 100 million animals are killed in testing each year in the US
why should innocent animals who cannot defend themselves be subject to such cruel, inhumane treatment
the mistreatment of animals shows that we, mankind are still savage in nature
there are other ways to test many of the products that we test on animals
animals have feeling, have emotion. they know when they are being mistreated and they deserve to be protected under law, to prevent their harm
just because animals cannot talk does not mean that they do not express emotion
Many human beings can't talk or advocate for themselves, should they not have rights like animals don't?

  8. -Giving animals rights is tricky because there are thousands of species of animals. There is no way we could imprison animals if they were violent because our society of humans is far more advanced than that of animals
-Animals are mistreated for food consumption, lab work, and hunting
-Torture and animal mistreatment are very similar in the way that the animal or human being mistreated does not have a way to speak up, other than to rebel against the perpetrator
-Animals do not have a form of communication to tell us what they like and don't like. This also does not make it okay for humans to mistreat animals simply because they have no way out of it.
-Animals are killed by the millions for mass-consumption
-Talking about definitions when it comes to a conscience gets messy because animals cannot communicate with humans. Anything with a heart can feel pain, so when people say that animals have no idea that they are being harmed, it is most likely false. There are many studies that prove animals are completely aware of the harm being done to them and the other animals around them.
